What inspired you to join the team at ABS?
When I was growing up I always knew I wanted to work in the family business with my father. We would often discuss the ins and outs of the business. Growing up I had an entrepreneurial mindset and wanted to operate and own my own business. When I was a teenager I would help out in the warehouse during the summers. This allowed me to learn more about the business.
What do you love most about your job?
I love the challenge of working with the team to grow and improve ABS. We are constantly improving our processes to make our teams more efficient as well as enhancing our customer experience. We developed our ABS Advantage which has set us apart from our competition. The constant battle to grow ABS and expand our portfolio is difficult but a rewarding challenge.
What do you think sets you apart in your field?
My analytical skills and constant drive for improvement. Through my post-secondary education and previous work experience I developed my ability to analyze information, solve problems and make proper decisions. This is something I enjoy doing and it comes naturally to me. Also, my constant push for improvement stems from the growth mindset at ABS. I believe that there is always room for improvement and my ability to question the norm and willingness to think outside the box allows for us to continue pushing forward.
How has your role evolved since you joined the team?
Since I was a teenager, I was working in the warehouse at ABS and learning about the family business. I became a full-time team member in 2015. I started in the warehouse and over the years slowly assumed more responsibilities while also hiring team members to fill my previous roles. Today I am the President/Operator of Advanced Battery Systems.
What have been some of the most important lessons you’ve learned throughout your career?
The most important lesson I have learned is what is required to be successful. If I want to truly excel at something it requires hard work and a consistent effort over a long period of time. I think people underestimate how much we can grow and improve over time if we put forth a focused and consistent effort.
Who are some of your biggest influences?
My biggest influence is my father, Dan Schiedel. I wouldn’t be the man I am today without his influence. He started Advanced Battery Systems which I am now continuing to grow as the second generation. Growing up he showed me what a great father looks like. He coached my sports teams and was invested in my childhood while also being a great husband, and running a successful company. Sadly, he passed away in 2019, but his legacy lives on through ABS and his grandchildren.
What would your perfect weekend look like?
My perfect weekend consists of spending time with my wife and 2 kids during the summer. We would go out and do some activities such as a walk with our dog and visit a park or have a new experience with the kids that we don’t normally do. There is nothing better than seeing the joy on their faces as they explore something new and exciting.
What’s your favourite type of food or cuisine?
Sushi is my favorite food, and my wife and I have explored nearly every sushi spot in Burlington. We’ve become self-proclaimed “sushi connoisseurs” and have developed a deep appreciation for what distinguishes truly high-quality sushi.
If you could pick any superpower, what would it be and why?
The ability to Teleport. This would basically allow me to be at multiple places at once and save a ton of time travelling. I could continue to grow ABS across Canada and the USA while also come home after work to spend time with my family.
If you could travel anywhere, where would you go and why?
My number 1 bucket list travel spot is a few countries Africa. I would love to go on a few safari trips and see the wildlife. Also, visit the tropical islands off the coast of East Africa such as the Seychelles.
